NutriDay has announced that, on International Literacy Day, it is celebrating measurable progress at Morojaneng Primary School in Katlehong, where its 'Tubs2Classrooms' project has helped improve learner reading fluency, comprehension and confidence over two years.
In 2024, Danone partnered with DP World and Motus Community Trust and Pick n Pay School Club to donate a library to Morojaneng Primary School. The project is unique because the library structure was built using bricks made from upcycled yoghurt tubs collected by schools across Gauteng through Danone's End-Producer-Responsibility programme.
"Two years later, we are proud to see the library fully integrated into the school curriculum, helping to foster a love of reading and support literacy development. The project is a powerful example of environmental sustainability creating lasting social impact," says Leanne Kiezer, Registered Dietitian and Head of Public Affairs at Danone Southern Africa.
"The 2030 Reading Panel report highlights the importance of strengthening foundational literacy in South Africa. International Literacy Day reminds us that access to books, guidance and welcoming learning spaces can change how children experience reading and help build the foundational skills needed for future success," says Ms Shayda Arbee, Trustee of DP World and Motus Community Trust.
Among Grade 3 learners, reading fluency age improved from 7.1 years in 2024 to 9.5 years in 2026, while reading comprehension age increased from 8.2 years to 11 years. Comprehension test scores rose from 33.2% to 50%, a 16.8 percentage point improvement.
Grade 6 learners recorded even stronger gains. Reading fluency age increased from 7.6 years to 10.5 years, while reading comprehension age rose from 9.4 years to 14 years. Comprehension test scores improved from 42% to 70%, a 28-percentage point increase.
"By creating spaces where learners can discover the joy of reading, we are investing in future success and building lasting impact in our communities," concludes Kiezer.
